Five fast, cost-effective ways to lighten up any space.
The amount of light in a room can significantly affect one’s mood. Unfortunately, not everyone is lucky enough to have a home that is drenched in natural light. If you feel like your home is on the dark and gloomy side, it’s time to brighten things up.
It doesn’t need to be hard, or expensive – in fact, lightening up your home can be simple – you just need to know what works.
Rather than embarking on a major renovation like expanding windows or installing new ones, discover these five fast ways to lighten up any room.
1. ADD A TABLE LAMP
Adding a small lamp to a side table is a subtle way to introduce more light to any room. Choose one that fits in with the décor of your home to avoid it looking out of place. For example, a frosted white lamp will emit a moody warmth instead of a fluorescent glow, which may be the perfect match for the mood you’re wanting to create.
2. ADD MIRRORS
A mirror can make a room look bigger and brighter. Position a mirror on a wall opposite natural light or near a lamp to ensure it bounces off the mirror and brightens twice as much space as it would on its own.
3. COUNT ON CANDLES
Candles are a good way to brighten up a dull room and delight your senses. If one candle isn’t quite doing the trick, try bunching two or three together in one spot or place one in each corner of the room to disperse the light. Likewise, a candle placed in front of a mirror will reflect the light back into the room.
4. FIX IT WITH A FLOOR LAMP
Floor lamps are usually a lot larger than traditional table lamps and they offer an added bonus of introducing extra light from a taller height.
Depending on the kind of space you want to light and the vibe you want to create, choose a floor lamp with a bulb at the base for a moody warmth or one with a clear lampshade if you want more light.
5. GO LIGHTER
Switching to a white or light coloured paint can make any room feel bigger, brighter and more spacious. Any existing light will bounce off the walls, instead of getting lost in a dark hue. Opting for pale timber floors is also a great way to lighten up a space.
